Our Lady of Lourdes

On this day, we turn our hearts to Our Lady of Lourdes, who appeared in 1858 to Saint Bernadette Soubirous, a poor, uneducated young girl of fragile health. In choosing Bernadette, Mary reminds us that God does not look at status, learning, or strength as the world does. He looks instead at the humility of the heart. Lourdes is a quiet yet powerful proclamation that God draws near to the lowly and works wonders through those who simply say yes.

Mary’s appearances at Lourdes were marked by simplicity. There were no dramatic commands, no grand promises of earthly success. Instead, Mary invited Bernadette—and through her, the whole world—to pray, do penance, and trust in God’s mercy. Her message was gentle but firm: conversion of heart is essential, and grace flows where humility makes room for God.

The miraculous spring at Lourdes stands as a lasting sign of hope. From dry ground came living water, symbolizing Christ’s promise of new life. For many pilgrims, this water has been associated with physical healing. Yet even more profound are the countless spiritual healings that have taken place there—hearts reconciled, faith restored, suffering embraced with new meaning. Lourdes teaches us that while God may not always remove our pain, He never wastes it. United with Christ, suffering can become a place of encounter and transformation.

Bernadette herself did not seek fame or reward. When questioned and doubted, she remained faithful, repeating only what she had seen and heard. Her life reminds us that obedience and perseverance often require quiet courage. Like Bernadette, we may be called to trust God even when others do not understand us, even when the path ahead is uncertain.

Mary’s words, “I am the Immaculate Conception,” reveal not only her identity but God’s plan for all of us. She is the sign of what grace can accomplish when a human life is fully open to God. In Mary, we see our own calling—to be made holy, to be healed, and to reflect God’s love to a wounded world.

Today, Our Lady of Lourdes invites us to bring our brokenness to God without fear. She encourages us to pray with perseverance, to repent with sincerity, and to hope without discouragement. Above all, she points us to her Son, Jesus, who is the true source of healing and salvation.

May we, like Bernadette, respond with humility. May we, like Mary, trust completely in God’s will. And may we leave this day renewed in faith, confident that God’s mercy is always at work—even in the most hidden places of our lives.
