FR. O’ SHEA Reflection for FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT

In this reflection for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Fr. Jim invites us to consider whether there are parts of our lives that we hesitate to share with God. In the Gospel story of Lazarus, Jesus walks directly to the tomb and calls his friend back to life, showing that there is no place too dark for God’s presence. Fr. Jim reminds us that God is never afraid of our struggles, our doubts, or the difficult parts of our story. When we allow God’s love to enter those places, healing and new life can begin. As Lent draws closer to Easter, we are reminded that life is stronger than death and hope is never lost.

REFLECTION NOTES
Core Theme:
There is no part of our lives that God is afraid to enter.

Key Message:
Fr. Jim invites us to reflect on whether there are parts of our lives that we hesitate to bring before God—areas of struggle, pain, or even shame. In the story of Lazarus, Jesus is not afraid to approach the tomb, even when others hesitate because of death and decay. The moment reminds us that God is not afraid of any part of our lives. Wherever darkness or difficulty may exist, God’s love can enter, bringing healing, light, and new life.

Key Idea:

  • Sometimes we hide parts of our lives from God.

  • God is never afraid of our struggles or brokenness.

  • Jesus approaching Lazarus’ tomb shows God’s willingness to enter even the darkest places.

  • When God’s love enters our lives, darkness can begin to change.

  • Lent leads us toward Easter hope: life is stronger than death.
